Lyrics

(misspellings included, the triangular hearts over the i’s omitted.)
Hudson, you’re so understanding! I’m sorry I never called &
I’m sorry I never can to see you at the gym! Well I went to the gym on Tuesday, January 4th, 2000. I stayed there for an hour & 30 minutes 4-5:30pm. But I deserved that because you probably thought I wasn’t gonna come but that alright. I figure I would call you Saturday, January 8th, 2000 & we’ll see if we could see each other, soon! My world is crushed without seeing you. I feel so lost, so incomplete without your comfort, your touch, & your love! And boy if I see you, you best believe I want my kiss, your magical, fall in love with you kiss! Try writing back I will appreciate it! Please, please, please!

Love Alwayz,
!Thickness!

Story

This was based on an idea of Merlin Mann’s, I guess. He wrote a song based on a found homework assignment, an essay this junior high kid wrote about trying to get some action over the weekend from these two girls before their parents came home.

I kinda forgot about that song until I found this letter in a park in a kind of low-rent area near a public library.

Something about this letter struck me as really poignant; it’s decorated with “I (heart) U” with the word “want” in all capital letters inside the hearts, the year “2000” is made into a smiley face, and every exclamation point is made with a triangle under the line, so it looks like an arrow. And Hudson’s name is all done in balloon letters colored with yellow and green highlighters.

And it was obviously folded precisely into squares, then
unfolded and read.

And then thrown away.

In a park.

Where I found it.
