Story

I have this habit of writing songs based on other songs. “Brave New World” would not have been written if I hadn’t heard Hugh Blumenfeld’s “Sailing to the New World.” “The Apothecary” wouldn’t have been written if I hadn’t heard “Shanty of the Arethusa” by the Decembrists. And this song wouldn’t exist without “West Coast Love Affair” by Unrest.

I don’t think any of these songs necessarily sound like their inspirations, but they do have a similar tone, if that makes any sense. This one was pretty much done as a specific kind of late 60s pop song, probably listened to by people wearing turtlenecks and wide belts. Except it namedrops a few mid-90s “alternative” bands.

I’d love to record it with an actual band.
This version does use my “virtual cellotron” – a kind of fake mellotron, made by sampling cello notes and then making them sound like the old tape-based keyboard instrument. So that makes me happy.
