Story

When I lived in South Beach, my next door neighbor was a chanteuse in love with Edith Piaf, her songs and her life. I was obsessed to a lesser degree with Tom Waits. So, when she started talking about doing a musical based on Piaf’s life, I tried writing a Tom Waits song about a life of melancholy excess, done as a cocktail recipe.

This demo was recorded into a 4-track, but the drums, bass and piano were all done using the “Jammer” midi program that got bundled with Cakewalk. Those digital sounds, my vocal quality, they’re all wrong for this song, but I think with the right people doing it, it could work really well as a stage piece. Of course, I would say that – but just try to imagine a big cabaret-style jazz ensemble doing this with a husky torch singer slurring the lyrics into an old-fashioned RCA microphone.
