shower curtain eyes Info

Lyrics

You sink down in you easy chair
we never talk … it isn’t fair
to fade away and hide inside
to watch the walls and miss the tide.
you watch the world through shower curtain eyes
a plastic film, I’d spread my wings and rise
above the parking lots and pavement,
do what I can to save this

coelacanth of a social life, it’s swimming round with
opaque eyes
we never go out just to ride, it can’t quite walk, I
can’t quite try to

lose my lungs and breathe in water
sink down like an aquanaut, or
naval sub with bombs and armored
deep sea diving suits … with iron plated boots.

Don’t get defensive
My plan’s not too comprehensive
understand that open minds mean open ends
like open faucets circumvent the

pipelines to the sea, the highways and symmetry
of road maps and points of view
that twist around until they’re true

you face the door and take a step outside
forget your fears and subtle suicides
from freon leaks and cathode rays, remember how to play with

plastic dinosaurs, the life that’s gone before,
the past you can’t outgrow so silent, so alone I

lose my lungs and breathe in water
sink down like an aquanaut, or
naval sub with bombs and armored
deep sea diving suits. with iron plated boots.

you watch the world through shower curtain eyes
hide behind the certain lies
that everyone agrees should be – it’s easier to float
than

see the swamp behind the shopping malls
the sitcoms and suburban sprawl
the cages built to keep us, still,
we’re only animals who

lose our lungs and breathe in water
sink down like an aquanaut, or
naval sub with bombs and armored
deep sea diving suits. with iron plated boots.
and shower curtains.

Story

This is a song about modern life and this phenomenon I’ve noticed among some of my friends (and myself) who simply never leave the house any more. Which just ain’t right.

It’s also about the ocean reclaiming Florida’s sick suburban sprawl, which is probably the best possible thing that could happen to it.

I play accordion, and Wendy thought she was just singing a rough draft but it wound up being the best take of the afternoon.
