Lyrics

You sparkle when you shine
Every time we meet on line
Our informations intertwine
I can touch the phosphor glow
The words are warm, the screen is cold
We monitor each other’s flow… control

IRL I might do something wrong
IRL things take too long
IRL there’s no delay
IRL what could I say…. what should I say?

I’ve reset my IRQs with the protocols you use
Your power surges through my fuse
Unzip to files too big
I ask for megs, you send me gigs
I’ve re-edited my config.sys

Can you feel, the reciprocity?
You’re better than TV
I could let you program me
You set my essence free
Through IRC…

Just say the word and we’ll upgrade
Rewire the motherboard we made
Stay resident, I’ll make the space
Don’t terminate good interface…

You sparkle when you shine
Every time we meet on line
Our informations intertwine
I can touch the phosphor glow
The words are warm, the screen is cold
We monitor each other’s flow… control

Story

Catchy and meaningful though it may be, this is not a folk song. This is a song about information machines, about glass and electricity, slow connections and longing.

Back in the 1990s, I asked my friend Matt what I should write a song about. He said, “Write a song about love and computers. Include a lyric about unzipped files and flow control.” This is probably not the song he had in mind.
